Worcester State University is a public, four-year university founded in 1874 as Worcester Normal School in the City of Worcester, Massachusetts. Although WSU traditionally has an emphasis on education, business, and nursing, it offers more than 50 academic programs across two schools: the School of Education, Health & Natural Sciences and the School of Humanities and Social Sciences. The university also 27 graduate programs. Barry M. Maloney is the eleventh president. It is a liberal arts university, with no religious affiliation, though it has ministry services available for a variety of religions on campus. Worcester State University offers both undergraduate and graduate programs, as well as programs for continuing education. It is a part of the Worcester Consortium, founded in 1968, in which students from Worcester State University and 11 other colleges in and around Worcester, are allowed access to all of the participating schools' facilities and classes. Other colleges in the Worcester Consortium include Anna Maria College, Assumption College, Becker College, Clark University, College of the Holy Cross, Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine, Mass College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences, Nichols College, Quinsigamond Community College, UMass Medical School, and Worcester Polytechnic Institute.
