The University of Texas at Austin (University of Texas, UT Austin, UT, or simply Texas) is a public research-intensive university located in Austin, Texas, United States. It is the flagship institution of the University of Texas System. Founded in 1883, its campus is approximately 0.25 miles (400 m) from the Texas State Capitol in Austin. The institution has the fifth-largest single-campus enrollment in the nation, with over 50,000 undergraduate and graduate students and over 24,000 faculty and staff.
The University of Texas at Austin was named one of the original eight Public Ivy institutions and was inducted into the American Association of Universities in 1929. The university is a major center for academic research, with research expenditures exceeding $640 million for the 2009–2010 school year. The university houses seven museums and seventeen libraries, including the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum and the Blanton Museum of Art, and operates various auxiliary research facilities, such as the J. J. Pickle Research Campus and the McDonald Observatory. Among university faculty are recipients of the Nobel Prize, Pulitzer Prize, the Wolf Prize, and the National Medal of Science, as well as many other awards.
UT Austin student athletes compete as the Texas Longhorns and are members of the Big 12 Conference. The university has won four NCAA Division I National Football Championships, and has claimed more titles in men's and women's sports than any other school in the Big 12 since the league was founded in 1996. Current and former UT Austin athletes have won 117 Olympic medals, including 14 in Beijing in 2008. The university was recognized by Sports Illustrated as "America's Best Sports College" in 2002.

Home Away From Home
UT Austin is a great school. Everyone here is very competitive and although some of the classes consist of more than 200 students the professors have office hours. They are very helpful and are glad to have you go talk to them.
There are many organizations that you can join at UT, so you will definitely find your people. The only thing that will hold you back from joining many organizations is time. Time.....sometimes you have an abundance of time and at other times you are scrambling to keep up.
Life outside of school is amazing. There is always something to do and as a student of UT Austin you are able to ride the city buses for free. This gives you many opportunities to get out of your room and explore the city. The drag has many shops and it's close to the school (for those of you who live on campus).
The dorms aren't too bad and if you and your roommate get along you have a buddy that you can take when you go exploring. TIP: Plan any trips you make on the bus beforehand and make sure you get on the bus that is going in the right direction. Some buses have the same name, such as 1L and 1M, but they go in different direction (North bound and South bound).
UT Austin has become like a second home to me and the only time I get depressed and feel like going back home is when I get tired of the food. I miss home-cooked meals, but my roommate is teaching me how to cook.
I LOVE COLLEGE!!!!
