Springfield Technical Community College was built on the site of the Springfield Armory National Historic Site. The armory, established by George Washington was an important supplier of US armaments for over a century and a half before closing in 1968

It was originally known as the Springfield Technical Institute and was located a few blocks to the west. The college moved in to occupy the majority of the Armory shortly after the armory closed. That same year the school was renamed to its current name.

While 20 acres (81,000 m2) of the 55-acre (220,000 m2) site remained in the hands of the National Park Service for historic preservation, 35 acres (140,000 m2) went to the college. Century old buildings were reused as classrooms while newer facilities were built elsewhere.
