Baylor University is a private Baptist university in Waco, Texas. Chartered in 1845 by the Republic of Texas, Baylor is the oldest university in Texas and was one of the first educational institutions west of the Mississippi River. The university's 1,000-acre campus is located on the banks of the Brazos River next to freeway I-35, between the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex and Austin. Baylor University is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Baylor is now a preeminent research university with a distinct undergraduate focus. Its emphasis on education is demonstrated by a small student body and 16:1 student-faculty ratio, among the lowest in the top American universities and the state of Texas. The university has produced various Fulbright Scholars, Truman Scholars, Marshall Scholars, and Rhodes Scholars. The university has a very high level of research activity for its size. Baylor is also notable for its Law, Business, and Pre-Med programs.

Baylor University athletic teams, known as the Bears, participate in 17 intercollegiate sports. BU is a member of the Big 12 Conference for all NCAA Division I athletics.
